A survey by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life found that "more than 28% of American adults have left the faith in which they were raised in favor of another religion- or no religion at all." Whether for marital reasons, changes of beliefs, or simply to explore another teaching, changing one's faith can be extremely terrifying.
Why is it so hard? One reason is because leaving a faith that you grew up in often means opening yourself up to questions and criticism by family and friends. Many of your loved ones simply will not understand your decision and will even view it as a put down, or rejection to their own beliefs. Religion, after all, is a very controversial subject for most individuals. People tend to believe that their faith is "the right one." With that being said, keep in mind that most of us belong to a certain religion because we were born into it, and our parents before us, and their parents before them, and so on and so on…
It’s Not Your Religion That Matters
When asked, in a round table discussion, by Brazilian theologist Leonardo Boff, "Your holiness, what is the best religion?" the Dalai Lama simply replied, "Your religion is not important." Since my words will not do justice to the profound speech of the Dalai Lama, I strongly encourage you to click here and watch the short, but compelling video.
What I did learn is this: there isn’t a "one size fits all" religion or faith. Religion after all is a manmade dogma. What’s important is that you find a faith that is similar to your own beliefs and feels right to you. There is no one "truth", only interpretations. Fortunately, in today’s generation, we tend to be a bit more open-minded and questioning. We can seek out and study other religions without being considered heathens.
Follow Your Heart and Do the Right Thing for You
In one of my favorite movies, the Matrix Reloaded, there was a scene in which Commander Lock says to Morpheus: "Not everyone believes what you believe!" To which Morpheus replies, "My beliefs do not require them to." I just love that line! (smile) But, my point is this: if you know in your heart that you’re doing what’s right for you, then you shouldn’t care what anyone else thinks. Your beliefs and values don’t need approval from anyone to make them true for you. Go with what you believe to be true. If you’re truly at peace, and have found a deeper connection to God, then you are more than likely in the right church. Or, you may decide that there isn’t a "church" that’s right for you; and, like the famous singer Ziggy Marley…love is your religion. Watch his music video, Love is My Religion, by clicking here.
No matter the reason, if you’re at a crossroad and feel that you need a "religious" change in your life, then do it! Will coming out of your religious closet be difficult and frightening? In a word…yes! However, it will also be one of the most liberating and freeing things you’ll ever do. No more lies, and no more pretending. The following quote from Katherine Mansfield emphasizes that you can’t live for the approval of others: "Risk! Risk anything! Care no more for the opinion of others, for those voices. Do the hardest thing on earth for you. Act for yourself. Face the truth."
This is the only life you are currently living. So, why not make it your own, on your own terms, the way you want it to be. If you’re living in a religious closet, I encourage you to step out. Become your true self and live the life you truly want. If you don’t, the only one who will ultimately suffer is you. Why? Because all you will have managed to do is create a prison for yourself…a prison of lies, and for what? So others won’t question or judge you!? Don’t allow fear to dictate and control your life. Step out on faith knowing that you are fully supported. And, most importantly, be proud of yourself for living your Truth.
